Philema, Brussels

Philema is a lovely discovery in Ixelles, bringing the warmth of Greek hospitality and the flavours of Crete to Brussels.

The restaurant strikes a beautiful balance between elegance and informality. The dining room is cosy and inviting, the service is friendly and professional, and there’s a relaxed atmosphere that makes you want to settle in and enjoy the evening.

The menu celebrates authentic Greek cooking, with particular attention to Cretan traditions and carefully sourced ingredients, many of them coming directly from Crete.

Expect generous Mediterranean flavours and dishes made for sharing. Highlights include slow-cooked lamb, wonderfully tender and full of flavour, grilled octopus with a delicate smoky touch, and creamy fava from Santorini.

I also particularly enjoyed the variety of smaller dishes, including dolma with cabbage and katsoc hiri, which reflect the diversity of Greek cuisine beyond the familiar classics.

What I appreciate most about Philema is that it feels refined without ever being pretentious. The food is thoughtful, the portions generous and the atmosphere genuinely welcoming.

For anyone who enjoys Mediterranean cooking and a restaurant where sharing good food comes naturally, Philema is a wonderful choice.

Price guide: Approximately €40–60 per person for dinner with drinks.
