Food & Travel Guide
Belgium
Belgium is home, and perhaps that is why I sometimes have to remind myself to slow down and experience it as a traveller. Over the years, I’ve discovered Brussels through guided walks, returned again and again to favourite neighbourhood restaurants, escaped the city for long lunches on beautiful terraces and travelled across the country in search of places worth lingering over.
Belgium may be small, but there is so much packed into it: historic cities, beautiful countryside, a North Sea coast and an extraordinary food scene. On this page, you’ll find places I’ve personally experienced, restaurants I genuinely recommend and ideas for discovering Belgium a little more slowly.
Want to experience Belgium beyond the obvious?
I can help you create a personalised journey through Belgium, combining places you genuinely want to experience with memorable food, beautiful stays and enough time to actually enjoy them.
Belgium in a nutshell
💬 Languages
Belgium has three official languages, Dutch in Flanders, French in Wallonia and German in a small eastern region. English is widely spoken, especially in cities and tourist areas.
💰 Currency
Belgium uses the Euro, abbreviated as EUR. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, although it is always handy to carry a little cash for markets and small cafés.
🍫 Food, glorious food
Come hungry, because Belgium takes eating very seriously. Think golden frites with endless sauces, rich beef stews cooked in beer, moules marinières, flaky waffles dusted with sugar and some of the world’s finest chocolate. Add legendary breweries, Trappist ales and inventive chefs and you have a country that rewards every curious eater.
💡 Travel ideas
Brussels mixes grand squares, Art Nouveau architecture and multicultural neighbourhoods with chocolate shops and buzzing food halls. Bruges feels like stepping into a fairytale, all canals, swans and medieval towers, while Ghent delivers the same beauty with a younger, livelier edge. Head south to the Ardennes for forest walks, riverside villages and cosy inns, or follow the coast for breezy beach towns and seafood lunches overlooking the North Sea.
