Old Boy, Brussels
If you enjoy discovering new flavours and sharing dishes around the table, Old Boy is a restaurant worth knowing about. Tucked away in Ixelles, near the Châtelain neighbourhood, it brings together South East Asian influences, creative cooking and a lively, relaxed atmosphere.
I visited for lunch with former colleagues, and what started as a simple catch-up quickly turned into a little feast. We ordered several dishes to share, including a spicy aubergine skewer, mussels with a twist, a fresh and zingy yum khung top salad, top man corn and wonderfully crispy karaage chicken. We finished with sticky rice and white peaches.
What I particularly enjoyed was the combination of flavours and the pleasure of sharing everything. The dishes arrive as they’re prepared, encouraging everyone to taste a little of everything.
The menu changes regularly, so there’s always something different to try. When I visited, most sharing plates were around €12–20, with baos at approximately €6. There’s also an evening tasting menu for those who want to explore more of the kitchen’s creativity.
Old Boy is the kind of place I love recommending to friends who enjoy adventurous food without a formal dining experience. Just remember to book ahead, as it’s a popular address.
