Food with Varinder, La Hulpe
Tucked away in La Hulpe, Food with Varinder is one of those restaurants that makes you feel welcome from the moment you arrive. Independent, family-run and wonderfully generous, it’s a place where the food is as warm and inviting as the atmosphere.
Run by an Indian and Iranian couple from the UK, the restaurant brings together influences from India, the Middle East and London’s vibrant food scene. The result is colourful, flavourful vegetarian cooking, full of spice, comforting dishes and unexpected combinations.
Dinner is served as a set menu, with one dish following another in a generous procession of flavours and textures. Everything is designed to be enjoyed, shared and talked about. You gradually realise just how much you’ve eaten, but somehow there’s always room for one more delicious plate.
What I particularly loved was the philosophy behind the restaurant. Water is served freely, the welcome is genuine, and there’s a relaxed atmosphere that makes you feel at home. It’s the sort of place where you start planning your next visit before you’ve even finished dinner.
Food with Varinder doesn’t try to be flashy. It wins you over with confident cooking, wonderful flavours and a generosity of spirit that makes the whole experience memorable.
Sunday brunch and a second restaurant in Leuven
If you prefer a leisurely Sunday brunch, Food with Varinder also offers one at its La Hulpe restaurant. Expect the same generous approach to vegetarian cooking, with colourful dishes inspired by India, Iran and the Middle East.
You’ll also find Food with Varinder in the heart of Leuven, at Parijsstraat 38, where the family-style dining concept continues with freshly prepared dishes and a regularly changing set menu.
I haven’t visited the Leuven restaurant yet, but it’s certainly an address I’d keep in mind when exploring the city.
